Progressive Rock
Progressive Rock is defined as being a form of rock that is not regressive.
Progressive rock in and of itself is by no means a means to an end but rather a style of providing refreshment to the otherwise boring state of what i call regressive rock.
Progressive rock and its nature
Progressive rock requires a sense of forward motion as proclaimed by Overhead, a finnish progressive rock band. "the way forward is over there" a phrase often repeated in these circles, but seldom taken to heart. Unfortunately prog has become a bastion of backwards-thinking and relics of times past.
There is no reason why this has to be so. The reason punk dispaced Progressive rock has more to to do with punk than prog. the time was ripe for straight up middle-finger salutes, and the progressives of the time all saw this to be true.
The fall of progressive rock
Progressive rock lost the battle for the hearts and minds of the youth of the day because of regressive thinking. as controversial as it may sound, the lifespan of all fads starts to dim as the masses embrace said fad. this is the precipice where the so-called "progressives" jump ship to the next big thing leaving everyone else behind to discuss what is progressive rock and what is not.
Thus it comes as no suprise that this is what eventually happened to all other genres too.
The rise of Progressive Rock
Eventually the situation of music in general has decayed into the commercial mass-produced pulp of today. as far as the movements of the masses go, diversification, or longtailing is the norm of the day. all genres of music have benefited from this. Contemporary Progressive rock like the finnish band Overhead has become moderately well-known globally. Whether you go to downtown tokio or midwestern USA or the facvellas of brazil, there will be a certain percentage of Progressive rock fans that are aware of overhead.
